Eligible Applicants
Grants are awarded only to nonprofit public charitable organizations including schools which are tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
Grants are made primarily for programs designed to develop new and innovative science curricula at elementary grade levels through college. Support is also given to special education projects for youth relating to conservation and the environment, climate change, and youth-led projects. Priorities include specific and innovative efforts that actively make a difference in communities, science, or the environment.
Preference is given to those proposals where a grant from the foundation promises to make a difference, those that seem likely to attract the support of other funders or able to support themselves in subsequent years, and those with the greatest promise of success in achieving their goals.
Science; physical/earth sciences; chemistry; biological sciences; and engineering.
Types of Support (in order of preference)
Seed money; pilot programs; curriculum development; program development; equipment; materials; research; matching/challenge support; occasional scholarship related funds.
Limitations
Giving on a national basis, with geographic focus in states where trustees reside (New York, New England, South Carolina and Arizona). No grants to individuals, or for annual campaigns, conferences and seminars, or fellowships; no loans. At least a two-year break between funded applications and new proposals is required.
How to Apply
The Foundation's board of trustees has two grant making meetings per year, in April/May and October/November. Deadlines dates to submit proposals (usually one month before scheduled meetings) are determined three months advance of meeting dates.
Step One
We do not accept unsolicited grant applications. All initial inquiries are required to contact the Chair at the Contact Page. Please provide your name, organization, contact information, and reason for contact. Inquiries are welcome throughout the year.
Step Two
Following your initial contact, first-time applicants are asked to submit a brief letter of inquiry. After reviewing your letter, the Foundation will schedule a phone interview to learn more about your organization and proposed project.
For returning applicants, the information shared during the phone inquiry is typically enough for the Foundation to determine whether a full proposal will be considered.
After this initial review, the Foundation will provide guidance on submitting a formal proposal, any additional materials needed, or arrange further conversations as appropriate.
